August is Women’s Month in South Africa—a time to honour women’s strength, courage and resilience. As we celebrate this important month let us pause to consider the girls on their journey to womanhood. Let us envisage a future where every girl has the opportunity to reach her full potential.

At the Durban Child and Youth Care Centre, we see daily how vital it is for children to have adults who believe in them, encourage them and remind them that their circumstances do not determine their future.
For girls especially, positive female role models can make a lasting difference. A caring woman who listens, encourages, teaches or simply believes in a child can build her confidence and help her see that she is capable of more than she imagined.
As we think on the powerful women we esteem, let us remember that they too were once girls. Empowerment begins early, through the words spoken, the example set, and the safe, respectful spaces created for girls to find their voices, recognise their worth, develop their talents and dream boldly about their futures. When girls are surrounded by strong, compassionate and positive role models, they learn resilience, kindness, responsibility and self-belief, and begin to see that they are capable of far more than they imagined.

We believe every child deserves a future filled with possibilities, to imagine becoming a teacher, doctor, entrepreneur, artist, athlete, social worker or something entirely different, and that those dreams deserve support and encouragement.

This Women’s Month, we honour the women who shape young lives—caregivers, teachers, mentors, social workers, mothers, grandmothers, volunteers and community members.
Most importantly, we celebrate the girls in our care and remind them:
Your voice matters.
Your dreams matter.
Your story matters.
You have the potential to make a difference in the world.
